Recently, we came across the sounds of Australian singer-songwriter and musician Lawson Hull. To say that we like what we hear at The iM would be a serious understatement. That being said, we couldn’t be more excited to be premiering his latest single, Girl, today. It’s a real infectious number that hits in all the right places.
The Newcastle-based artist gives his “singer-songwriter” sound a sun-drenched dip into a more heartland rock realm, channeling the likes of Tom Petty as well as contemporaries like Kevin Morby. The evolution feels fitting for a new upcoming release titled Hangin’ Out With Cowboys.
“Girl is based on the classic George Costanza line, ‘It’s not you, it’s me,’ when you’re trying to let someone down easy. You’re insecure, a bit of a wash-up and you don’t want to see some poor girl end up with you in the big messy picture. The video looks back at an old relationship in rose-coloured glasses, remembering all the good times.”
“Being in a lockdown (in Australia), of course, the only person fit to play the old flame was my wife. Weirdly bittersweet, filming lovey-dovey things but knowing what the song is about. The whole thing turned out amazing as we sent the clips to my trusted creative genius, Angus Bell Young, where he put his warm, glowing spin on things and made it into something special to accompany this energetic, sad song.”
Check out the video in the embed below, and keep it locked to his socials going forward. The new EP is set for release on August 27th. Keep your ears and eyes open … this artist is one to watch.
